Kwara state was creaed in 1967, by the military government when Gowon broke the four regions that then constituted the Federation of Nigeria into 12 states. At its creation, the state was comprised of the previous Ilorin and Kabba territories of the then Northern Region and was at first named the West Central State yet later changed to "Kwara" (Kuwara, Quarra or Kowara), which is the local name that the Nupes have given to the River Niger which forms the northern border of the state. In Nupenci (Nupe language), Kwara means 'Sea' or 'Lake' of the Nupes. Farming is the primary wellspring of the economy and the important cash products are: cotton, cocoa, espresso, Kolanut, tobacco, beniseed and palm produce. Mineral assets in the state are Gold, limestone, marble, feldspar, mud, kaolin, quartz and stone rocks.
